Nach verschiedenen historischen Quellen war Tegel ursprünglich ein quadratisches Dorf, das in einer Sackgasse am Tegeler See endete. Diese Lage legt nahe, dass Tegel ursprünglich ein slawisches Fischerdorf war. Bislang wurden jedoch keine Spuren einer spätslawischen Siedlung gefunden. Tegel wird erstmals in einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1322 als Kirchdorf Tygel erwähnt. Der Name ist möglicherweise vom niederdeutschen Wort "Ziegel" abgeleitet. Offenbar muss Tegel ein bemerkenswertes Ziegelgebäude gehabt haben. Eine andere Erklärung sieht in dem Ortsnamen Tegel eine slawische Wurzel mit der Bedeutung "Anhang". Dies würde sich auf den Tegeler See beziehen, der ein Anhängsel der Havel ist. Tegel befindet sich im ehemaligen französischen Sektor. Die Straße, die vom U-Bahnhof zum Tegeler See führt, hat die höchste Dichte an Eisdielen in Berlin.
According to various historical sources, Tegel was originally a square village that ended in a cul-de-sac on Lake Tegel. This location suggests that Tegel was originally a Slavic fishing village. However, no traces of a Late Slavic settlement have been found to date. Tegel is first mentioned in a document from 1322 as the church village Tygel. The name is possibly derived from the Low German word "Ziegel". Apparently Tegel must have had a remarkable brick building. Another explanation sees in the place name Tegel a Slavic root with the meaning "appendix". This would refer to Lake Tegel, which is an appendage of the Havel River. Tegel is located in the former French sector. The street leading from the subway station to Tegeler See has the highest density of ice cream shops in Berlin.
In Alt-Tegel kann man verschiedene architektonische Stile bewundern, vom Renaissancestil, in dem das Tegeler Schloss (auch Humboldt-Schloss genannt) erbaut wurde, über den klassizistischen Stil der Gebäude in den Hauptstraßen, den romantischen Stil der Kirche bis hin zum industriellen Stil, den der Industrielle Borsig nach Tegel brachte. Auch der Bau des Einkaufszentrums Tegel Quartier wurde kürzlich abgeschlossen. Die U-Bahn-Linie 6, die S-Bahn-Linie S25 und zahlreiche Buslinien verbinden diesen Stadtteil mit dem Zentrum Berlins.
In Alt-Tegel you can admire different architectural styles, from the Renaissance style in which Tegel Castle (also called Humboldt Castle) was built, to the Classicist style of the buildings in the main streets, the Romantic style of the church, and the Industrial style brought to Tegel by the industrialist Borsig. The construction of the Tegel Quartier shopping center was also recently completed. The subway line 6, the S-Bahn line S25 and numerous bus lines connect this district with the center of Berlin.
Wenn man die Hauptstraße der Fußgängerzone direkt vor der U-Bahn-Station entlanggeht (die derzeit repariert wird und nur mit dem Ersatzverkehr erreichbar ist), findet man einen Platz mit einer Föntane, auf dem immer viel Leben herrscht, verschiedene Restaurants und Straßenmusiker. Die Alt-Tegeler Wasserfontäne ist vom Frühjahr bis zum Spätherbst in Betrieb. Er wurde von dem Architekten Schinkel erbaut und ist als Schinkels Brunnen bekannt.
If you walk along the main street of the pedestrian zone right in front of the subway station (which is currently being repaired and can only be reached by replacement transport), you will find a square with a föntane, which is always bustling with life, various restaurants and street musicians. The Alt-Tegel water fountain is in operation from spring to late autumn. It was built by the architect Schinkel and is known as Schinkel's Fountain.

If you walk along this street in the direction of Tegeler See, you will find about ten ice cream shops on each side, of which the Italian ones are the most popular. Asian, Indian, Italian and Eastern European restaurants are always busy, as are cafes and bakeries.At the end of the street you reach the Greenwich Promenade. From there you can take a boat tour. The tour starts at Greenwichpromenade in Berlin-Tegel and goes north along Villa Borsig and the islands of Lake Tegel. Eine Brücke, die Sechserbrücke, führt von der Greenwichpromenade über das Tegeler Fließ auf die andere Seite. Von dort aus kann man am Ufer des Sees entlang spazieren, wo es auch Boote und Kajaks zu mieten gibt, sowie Grillplätze.
Besonders interessant ist, dass man im Schloss Tegel auf den Spuren der Gebrüder Humboldt wandeln kann, die in der Nähe geboren wurden und gelebt haben, und dass das Schloss nach Voranmeldung besichtigt werden kann.
A bridge, the Sechserbrücke, leads from the Greenwichpromenade across the Tegeler Fließ to the other side. From there you can walk along the shore of the lake, where there are also boats and kayaks for rent, as well as barbecue areas.
